vlix
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vlix was a video app for applying filters and sharing videos, developed by SpotMixer.
02 / vlix FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Vlix was retired by its owner rather than failing on its own. Disney quietly acquired Vlix's owner SpotMixer in 2012 (SpotMixer also ran the consumer video site One True Media, with five million users), and about a year later the Vlix video app was shut down. No public explanation of the decision was given; the app simply disappeared under Disney ownership in July 2013.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Video app discontinued
In July 2013 users were informed that Vlix would close in August, with downloads available until 31 August. SpotMixer’s acquisition was separately confirmed; its own closure was not.

- 02
Disney quietly acquired SpotMixer in 2012.
- 03
In July 2013, about a year after the acquisition, the Vlix app was shut down under Disney ownership.
