01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nuula was a Toronto-based fintech building a financial services 'super app' for small and medium businesses. Launched in 2021 out of BFS Capital, a 20-year-old firm providing SME loans, and led by CEO Mark Ruddock, it bundled free tools like cash-flow forecasting, personal and business credit score monitoring, and customer sentiment tracking with an embedded-finance strategy — white-label business banking, B2B payments, and an on-demand line of credit. It raised $120 million ($20 million in equity led by Edison Partners plus a $100 million credit facility managed by Ares Management's Credit Group). On January 26, 2023, it was acquired by financial health platform Nav Technologies for undisclosed terms; Nuula's staff and technology were integrated into Nav's mobile offering.
