01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Everli (originally Supermercato24, rebranded in 2020) was Italy's leading online grocery marketplace. Its platform let customers shop groceries online from partner retailers and have them delivered the same day, and it built the largest retailer network in Italy, working with 12 of the country's 13 top retailers. The company also offered a white-label solution letting retailers launch their own branded e-grocery services, and expanded into Poland by acquiring Szopi.

02 / Everli (Supermercato24) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Everli's financial position deteriorated sharply in the second half of 2023 as post-COVID market dynamics hit online grocery. Facing a liquidity crisis, the company failed to raise fresh funding after Brussels-based Verlinvest, which had been set to lead a new round, declined to support it further. Its board was forced to choose between liquidating the company or finding a rescue buyer; backers fully wrote down their investment and sold the company for 1 EUR to a buyer willing to assume its liabilities.
