Koinex
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Koinex was India's first and largest digital assets exchange, founded in August 2017 by Rakesh Yadav, Rahul Raj and Aditya Naik in Mumbai. It onboarded over a million users and was backed by Beenext's Dirk van Quaquebeke and Pantera Capital's Daniel Morehead.
02 / Koinex FAILURE REASONS
Failure analysis
The failure was external and regulatory, not product-market fit. In April 2018 the Reserve Bank of India barred banks from serving companies dealing in cryptocurrencies, and payment gateways and banks began denying services and blocking transactions for digital asset trading. With bank accounts holding user deposits effectively frozen, trading volumes sliding for over a year and fee revenue drying up, and with no clarity on the regulatory framework despite a writ petition pending in the Supreme Court, the business became unviable and the founders chose to shut down operations.
