01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BharatPe is an Indian fintech founded in April 2018 by Ashneer Grover and Shashvat Nakrani. It built India's first UPI-interoperable QR code and the country's first zero-MDR payment acceptance service for merchants: a single QR for all payment apps, plus lending and insurance products for shopkeepers, with 7 million merchants across 140+ cities and 12 crore UPI transactions a month at its peak. In August 2021 it raised $370 million led by Tiger Global at a $2.85 billion valuation (becoming a unicorn), and its joint venture with Centrum Group won RBI in-principle approval to take over PMC Bank and launch a small finance bank. The company is known for its dramatic 2022 founder saga: co-founder and MD Ashneer Grover left amid a governance review and alleged financial irregularities involving him and his wife Madhuri Jain Grover. The company continued operating after his exit.
