Launcher Labs
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Launcher Labs was a Y Combinator W21 and a16z crypto-backed startup founded by Jayme Hoffman that built consumer crypto apps, including Launchcaster (a Product Hunt-style discovery platform for crypto projects built on Farcaster), Frameboard and Maindrop.
02 / Launcher Labs FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Founder Jayme Hoffman wrote that after four years of pivots (Newzip marketplace, Offload, Maindrop, Launchcaster, Launcher mini-apps, Frameboard), Launcher Labs failed to reach product-market fit because the team did not find and commit to a good customer/problem, and a crypto pivot with a team poorly fitted to crypto led them to shut down rather than keep pivoting.
Hoffman stated they failed to reach PMF after many pivots.
Repeated pivots into low-frequency/nice-to-have problems and crypto did not yield a venture-scale customer problem.
He wrote the team was not a good fit for crypto, which hindered PMF and led to shutdown.
