Staging Labs
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Staging Labs was a blockchain startup founded by Francois Le Nguyen - an angel investor and former general manager at Entrepreneur First - and co-founder Jake Harwood. After Le Nguyen lost $10,000 in a Discord phishing attack, he built Staging Labs to protect crypto users from scams and fraud. Its product, Saferoot, actively scanned transactions 24/7: in a suspected attack it intercepted a transaction after the user clicked send but before funds went through, automatically moving digital assets from the vulnerable wallet to a backup safe. The three-person startup raised $1.1 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed round backed by Flourish Ventures. After the late-2022 crypto crash destroyed willingness to pay for crypto protection, the product never found traction and Le Nguyen sold the startup.
02 / Staging Labs FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Staging Labs was killed by market timing. The late-2022 crypto crash - FTX's collapse and the broader bear market - wiped out the willingness of crypto holders to pay for transaction insurance just as Staging Labs was building it. Le Nguyen has said he did everything by the lean-startup book - found a co-founder, built an MVP, did customer discovery, checked willingness to pay, built a waitlist - but the world changed underneath him, and by the time he realized demand had evaporated, it was too late. Partnerships he had counted on also proved a double-edged sword. Rather than shut down, he managed to sell the startup even though the product was not working out.
