01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BrainNook was an educational virtual world for children in grades 1-5, built by Nunook Interactive (Palo Alto, California and Chennai, India), founded by former EA Games developer Abhijeet Vijayakar. Launched in open beta in October 2010, it offered over a hundred multiplayer math and English games aligned with California's grades 1-5 content standards: kids played as crash-landed aliens exploring virtual worlds (the Sahara, the Arctic, the Amazon jungle and more), unlocking new worlds and harder games as their skills grew. The free virtual world added teacher and parent performance reports, and an iPad app in 2012 offered in-app game unlocks. No shutdown or failure event has been documented.
