01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
A digital platform connecting home buyers and sellers.
02 / Aalto FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Founder Nick Narodny publicly stated that Aalto was not going to work: the market shifted, regulations changed, and the investor-backed vision became impossible to realize.
Founder: market shifted
Founder: regulations changed
Founder: original vision became impossible to realize
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
In an August 2025 post, Narodny said that just over a year earlier he told a16z and Sequoia Aalto would not work and offered their money back; they encouraged starting something new. He and some Aalto teammates later built Titus. This is a founder announcement that the Aalto home-buying business would not continue, distinct from a later payments product. Sequoia later listing 'Titus (fka Aalto)' is noted but does not replace this first-person ending statement. Exact calendar day of cessation is not in the post.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Do not build a business whose existence depends on a single regulatory policy surviving.
- 02
A pivot that needs the old world's rules gone is just a second bet on regulation.
- 03
When the market shifts and the vision becomes impossible, returning capital beats burning it.
