Addressbin
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Addressbin was an email list-collection tool: an easy way to collect email addresses via opt-in forms, with a special forwarding address for each list that would forward messages to every address on it - effectively a mailing list. The founder added drip messages and opt-in forms on top.
02 / Addressbin FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Addressbin failed because of bad marketing and big competitors, in the founder's own words: as a solo technical founder he ended up competing with Mailchimp and everyone else in the email marketing space, and decided to stop working on it.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Launch
Software developer Adam Bard builds Addressbin as an easy way to collect email addresses, initially as a facility for himself to do so for free, then opens it to other people.
- Wound down
Bard stops actively developing Addressbin: competing with Mailchimp and other email-marketing giants, he decides to stop working on it, leaving the service running but essentially abandoned; Failory classifies the company as closed in 2018.
