PayMate
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
PayMate was an Indian B2B payments platform founded in 2006 that let small and medium enterprises pay suppliers with credit cards even when the suppliers did not accept cards. It acted as an intermediary, taking card payments from buyers and disbursing funds to suppliers through bank transfers, and raised about $100 million from investors including Visa and Kleiner Perkins.
02 / PayMate FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
PayMate's model arbitraged inefficiencies in India's payment system, and those inefficiencies disappeared. The rise of UPI, digital wallets, and direct bank-to-bank rails through the 2010s and early 2020s erased the need for card-based intermediation, and the company never evolved beyond its payments-arbitrage play. It filed for a large IPO in 2022 but the regulator sent the draft back in 2023 with no refiling; losses accumulated year after year, and by late 2024 it was struggling to pay staff.
