GAC Mitsubishi Tech Unit China
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GAC Mitsubishi was a China automotive joint venture formed in 2012 by Guangzhou Automobile Group (50%), Mitsubishi Motors (30%) and Mitsubishi Corporation (20%) to build and sell Mitsubishi-brand vehicles in China, centered on the Outlander SUV made at its Changsha plant in Hunan. Sales peaked at 144,000 units in 2018, then collapsed to 33,600 by 2022 as domestic EV brands took over. In October 2023 Mitsubishi ended local production and GAC took full ownership, repurposing the plant for its Aion EV brand.
02 / GAC Mitsubishi Tech Unit China FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
GAC Mitsubishi was wiped out by China's faster-than-expected shift to electric vehicles. The venture had no competitive EV lineup: its vehicles were internal-combustion models in a market where EVs reached 20% of new sales, and Mitsubishi launched no fully electric passenger car in China. Sales fell from 144,000 units in 2018 to 33,600 in 2022, a new Outlander hybrid launched in December 2022 missed its targets, and the Changsha plant was suspended in March 2023. By March 31, 2023 the venture reported negative net assets of 1.414 billion yuan, technically insolvent, and Mitsubishi's board gave up on resuming production.
