Faraday Future
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc. is a Los Angeles-area electric vehicle company founded in April 2014 by Chinese billionaire Jia Yueting (founder of LeEco). Pitched as a 'Tesla killer,' it unveiled the FF 91 luxury EV concept at CES 2016, once planned a $1 billion factory in North Las Vegas, and went public via a SPAC merger with Property Solutions Acquisition Corp. in July 2021 at a $3.4 billion valuation, raising about $1 billion. Customer deliveries of the FF 91 finally began in 2023, but only a small number of vehicles were delivered; the company later pivoted to a lower-priced second brand, Faraday X, and in 2026 expanded into robotics.
02 / Faraday Future FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Faraday Future never escaped chronic underfunding: despite billions raised, it could not finance mass production of the FF 91 — the Nevada factory plan collapsed, key executives (including the CFO and CTO, who left to found Canoo) departed, and thousands of employees were furloughed or laid off. Founder Jia Yueting's personal bankruptcy (2019) and debt-defaulter status in China poisoned investor confidence, and the SPAC lifeline of 2021 was followed by a stock collapse: in April 2024 Nasdaq determined to delist the company after its shares traded at $0.10 or less for ten straight days and it failed to file its 2023 10-K. The FF 91, promised within 12 months of the SPAC deal, arrived years late in token numbers.
