MaaS Global
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MaaS Global was a Helsinki mobility-as-a-service company founded in 2015 by Sampo Hietanen, widely known as the father of the MaaS concept. Its flagship product Whim, launched in 2016, was the first commercial mobility-as-a-service offering: a single app bundling public transport, taxis, city bikes, e-scooters, shared and rental cars on subscription or pay-as-you-go plans. Whim expanded to cities including Helsinki, Turku, Antwerp, Vienna, Birmingham, Tokyo and across Switzerland, amassing around one million users and over 30 million rides. The company raised over $75 million from investors including Toyota, Mitsubishi, BP Ventures and NordicNinja, and filed for bankruptcy in March 2024.
02 / MaaS Global FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Whim never reached financial sustainability: MaaS Global's B2C subscription model proved structurally unprofitable, with the costs of providing mobility options outweighing subscription revenue. In 2022 the company reported a 9.3 million euro loss on just 3.8 million euros of turnover, and its workforce had already shrunk from a peak of 120 to 38. With no path to profitability in a tough mobility market, the company discontinued the Whim app in early March 2024 and filed for bankruptcy with the Finnish Legal Register Center later that month; Dutch MaaS platform umob was appointed by the curator as the takeover party.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Bankruptcy
MaaS Global (Whim) filed for bankruptcy in Helsinki District Court after informing customers at the start of March that the app would cease; Sustainable Bus similarly reported the bankruptcy filing about a month after Whim operations halted, with assets later acquired from bankruptcy by umob.
