01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Kamupak was a Finland-based reusable packaging startup founded in 2018 to fight single-use plastic waste. It created a digital deposit return scheme that kept reusable food containers in circulation: customers paid a 1 to 3 euro deposit on a reusable KamuDish when ordering takeaway and got the deposit back or a clean container on return. The first KamuDish launched in 2020, reached 50 restaurants, cafes and supermarkets in Finland by 2021, and the company later expanded across the Nordics and merged with Swedish competitor &Repeat in 2023.

02 / Kamupak FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors

Founder/chair Iida Miettinen told Yle Kamupak (Kamu Collective) could not raise enough funding to continue; startup funding was tight and the reusable-packaging market was not mature enough, with restaurants lacking willingness and consumer habits hard to change.

Fundraising

Founder stated the company failed to raise sufficient financing to continue operations.

Market Timing

Founder said the market was not mature enough for reuse; restaurants lacked willingness and society remains built around single-use and waste handling.
