01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Enovate Motors, also known as Tianji or originally Dearcc, was a Chinese premium electric vehicle manufacturer founded in 2015 by Zhang Hailiang in Zhejiang. Launched during China's EV gold rush with backing of about $1.67 billion, it released the ME7 mid-to-large SUV in 2020 and the ME5 range-extended compact SUV in 2021, pitching premium quality without a foreign-brand premium.

02 / Enovate Motors (Tianji) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Enovate died of capital exhaustion and execution failure in a winner-take-most market. Over 300 Chinese EV startups launched together while NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, BYD and Tesla consolidated the market. Deliveries in 2020 plateaued by 2021 with monthly sales under 1,000; showroom visits masked weak demand. Cash reserves ran dry: the Shaoxing plant halted in 2022, operations partially suspended in April 2023, and assets were frozen in early 2024 in pre-bankruptcy proceedings.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Bankruptcy

A creditor submitted a bankruptcy liquidation application concerning the Enovate Changsha entity in 2024; this identifies the manufacturing entity rather than a court declaration covering the entire group.
