The Happy Home Company
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
The Happy Home Company was a home-services startup founded in 2014 by Doug Ludlow, who had previously sold his startup Hipster to AOL. Its goal was to take the confusion out of home maintenance: 'home managers' helped homeowners find the right service provider when something broke and develop long-term maintenance plans. It raised $2.54M in seed funding in May 2015 from investors including Lowercase Capital, SV Angel and Box Group, and employed 19 people.
02 / The Happy Home Company FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The company never made the transition from scrappy startup to self-sustaining business. Customers turned out to be more price-sensitive than founder Doug Ludlow expected, margins stayed low, and repeat business was hard to come by — it proved very hard to build a home-service brand people engaged with regularly. The company raised seed funding but could not raise a Series A, and shut down in November 2016.
