01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
SkySQL was the Finnish data-management brand born as SkySQL Corporation Ab in 2009/2010, founded by MySQL veterans including Michael 'Monty' Widenius to offer commercial services around MySQL and later MariaDB. It merged with Monty Program Ab on April 23, 2013, forming what became MariaDB Corporation. MariaDB revived the SkySQL name in 2020 as a cloud database-as-a-service (DBaaS), spun it out as an independent company (SkySQL Inc.) in December 2023, which raised a $6.6 million seed round and built an AI-powered, serverless, multi-cloud DBaaS with agentic AI features (SkyCopilot).
