Humane
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Humane was a San Francisco consumer-hardware startup founded in 2018 by ex-Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno. It built the Ai Pin, a screenless wearable that clipped to clothing and promised a smartphone replacement: voice assistant, camera, multilingual translation and a laser-projected display on the user's hand, powered by its CosmOS AI platform. Announced November 2023 and shipped April 2024 at $699 (later cut to $499), the device was named one of Time's Best 200 Inventions of 2023. It raised more than $230 million.
02 / Humane FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The Ai Pin flopped: reviewers found it slow and unreliable with overheating problems, and sales collapsed — leaked internal figures put it at roughly 10,000 units sold against a 100,000-unit target, with daily returns eventually outnumbering sales. On February 18, 2025, HP agreed to buy Humane's assets for $116 million (CosmOS, 300+ patents and most of the engineering team) for its new HP IQ unit. HP had no interest in the Pin itself: Humane shut the device down on February 28, 2025, bricking every unit by cutting server access.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
/Reuters/The Verge: Humane discontinued AI Pin sales; devices stop connecting to Humane servers after 28 Feb 2025 (calling/messaging/AI/cloud off); customer support dissolved.
- Asset sale
most assets sold to HP for $116M (CosmOS, talent, patents); Reuters: wind down wearable pin business after disappointing reviews and lack of orders; Verge: 'selling its remnants'; TechCrunch cites Bloomberg that Humane sought $750M–$1B in May 2024—far above $116M (sourced ask vs deal; no invented multiple).

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Ship when the product is ready, not when the hype is peaking: the Ai Pin launched slow, unreliable and overheating, and reviews killed it.
- 02
Match the price to the value delivered; the $699-to-$499 cut showed the economics never worked.
- 03
Have a fallback plan for hardware margins: Humane's only exit was an IP fire sale at an 86% drop from its peak valuation.
