Ridejoy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Ridejoy was a US community marketplace for sharing rides, founded in January 2011 by Kalvin Wang, Randy Pang and Jason Shen. It made it easy to find friendly people to share long-distance trips with: drivers could list extra seat space and passengers could book rides. The startup raised $1.3 million in seed funding (February 2012) from Founder Collective, Lerer Ventures, Alexis Ohanian, Freestyle Capital and SV Angel.
02 / Ridejoy FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
The founders were not ready to commit to Ridejoy for the long haul. After six months of ideating without finding a new direction, they folded the company: they stripped out the payment systems, left the product up for users, and returned the remaining funds to investors. The site kept running on its own for two years — 45,000 users and 69,000 rides posted, about 35 million miles of potential road trips — until the domain lapsed in April 2015.
