01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Scarf was an Oakland, California startup founded in 2019 by Avi Press and Tim Dysinger. It created Scarf Gateway, a central access point for open-source software packages independent of host registries, giving developers analytics on how their software was adopted and used — like Google Analytics for open source — plus options to monetize their code. It exited stealth in March 2021 with a $2 million seed round led by Wave Capital and 468 Capital (with Scott Belsky and Kevin Hartz), then raised $5.3 million from Race Capital, Freestyle Capital and individual backers, reaching about 300 developers and organizations distributing 900 packages through the platform.
