Teforia
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Teforia was a Mountain View hardware startup founded in 2014 by Allen Han. It built a 'smart' tea infuser — a beautifully designed device with a handblown glass infusion globe and algorithms that tuned each brew — paired with proprietary RFID-tagged tea satchels called Sips. The flagship Teforia Classic sold for $999. The company raised about $17 million, including a $12 million Series A led by Translink Capital, and was valued at $35 million.
02 / Teforia FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Teforia bet that consumers would pay a premium for a perfect cup of tea the way they did for coffee — a Juicero-style thesis for the tea world. They would not: the product never gained widespread popularity, and the $999–$1,500 price tag kept it a curiosity. In a very difficult fundraising environment for smart-kitchen hardware, Teforia could not raise the money needed to keep educating the market. CEO Allen Han wrote that 'it would take a lot more financing and time to educate the market' — financing they simply could not raise. In October 2017, after three years and $12 million, Teforia announced it was closing for good.
