Getaround
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Getaround was a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace founded in San Francisco in 2011. Owners listed personal or fleet vehicles fitted with Getaround Connect, a BLE/telematics smart-lock kit, enabling keyless app-based rental. The company merged with France's Drivy in 2019, acquired HyreCar in 2023, and went public via SPAC in December 2022 on the NYSE. At its peak it operated in more than 1,000 cities across eight countries. On February 7, 2025 its board approved an orderly wind-down of US operations, including the HyreCar business, laying off all US employees; the European business was later sold to Denmark's GoMore in April 2026 and the company moved toward formal dissolution.
02 / Getaround FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Getaround's US business was killed by an ongoing lack of liquidity. Despite significant improvements in profitability and extensive restructuring, including layoffs in 2023 and 2024, and despite acquiring HyreCar out of its own bankruptcy in 2024, the company determined that US operations were no longer viable and approved an orderly wind-down on February 7, 2025, laying off all US employees.
