Roadstar.ai
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Roadstar.ai was a Shenzhen-based autonomous driving startup founded in May 2017 by three ex-Baidu engineers: CEO Tong Xianqiao, CTO Heng Liang and chief scientist Zhou Guang. It developed Level 4 autonomous driving technology with a multi-sensor fusion solution (LiDAR, cameras, radar, GPS), aiming to sell customizable self-driving solutions to traditional automakers. It raised $138 million in total, including a $128 million Series A in May 2018 from Wu Capital and Shenzhen Capital Group at a $600 million valuation.
02 / Roadstar.ai FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Roadstar.ai was killed by a toxic combination of founder conflict and stalled technology. In January 2019, CEO Tong Xianqiao and CTO Heng Liang publicly accused chief scientist Zhou Guang of taking kickbacks during the Series A fundraising and using fraudulent data in a government regulatory report; Zhou was fired on January 21. The public infighting destroyed investor confidence: major shareholders moved to dissolve and liquidate the company, its roughly RMB 600 million in funds were frozen, and the CEO received an arbitration notice. With product development going nowhere and the team at war with itself, the company shut down in early 2019.
