01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Shixianghui (食享会, 'Food Enjoyment Club') was a Wuhan-based community group-buy e-commerce platform founded in December 2017. Its B2B2C model: a community leader (often a stay-at-home mum or corner shop owner) gathers neighbors in a WeChat group, members place orders, the platform ships bulk to the leader, and users pick up from the leader's home or shop. At its peak it was among the top community group-buy platforms in China with monthly GMV of 210 million RMB, focusing on fresh produce and household goods. It raised $44.6 million (Series A $14.6M in August 2018, Series B in February 2019, Series B1 in September 2019).

02 / Shixianghui FAILURE REASONS

Why it failed

Shixianghui was squeezed out of China's community group-buy war. The sector exploded in 2019–2020, but then the giants arrived: Didi's Chengxin Youxuan, Pinduoduo's Duoduo Maicai, Meituan Youxuan and Alibaba-backed Nicetuan, all burning cash to buy market share with below-cost pricing. In March 2021 regulators imposed maximum fines on five platforms for irregular pricing — Shixianghui, the smallest, was fined RMB 500,000. Caught between subsidized giants and a regulatory crackdown on the whole sector, the startup couldn't sustain the burn. PitchBook marked it Out of Business on July 27, 2021.

05 / AFTERMATH

Lessons

Shixianghui's lesson is that in subsidy wars, the independent startup is the food, not the diner. It had real traction (210M RMB monthly GMV) and $44.6M raised — and it still lost, because the giants could lose money on every order longer than it could. The lesson: when platform giants enter your category with below-cost pricing, your option set collapses to three — raise a war chest fast, get acquired, or die. Shixianghui also shows that regulatory crackdowns don't hit everyone equally: the RMB 500,000 fine was a rounding error for the giants and a death sentence for the small player.
