01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Uber Technologies is the world's largest ride-hailing company, founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp and headquartered in San Francisco. The app connects riders with drivers on demand, scaling from a black-car service into a global mobility platform spanning 63+ countries, plus food delivery (Uber Eats) and freight (Uber Freight). After raising nearly $20 billion in debt and equity — with SoftBank as its largest shareholder — Uber went public on the New York Stock Exchange on May 9, 2019 in an $8.1 billion IPO, one of the largest in years. It remains an operating, publicly traded company under CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
