01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Plurchase was a San Francisco social-shopping startup in Y Combinator's Summer 2009 batch, founded by Jeff Ferber, Dean Mao and Tom Saffell. Its first product was an 'augmented reality for online shoppers': visit Zappos or Amazon through Plurchase and a social sidebar appeared with live chat, a buddy list, bookmarking and ratings, so friends could browse together and give shopping advice in real time. It later pivoted the same sidebar concept to collaborative real-estate search — a JavaScript add-on letting home shoppers share listings, chat, take notes and vote with agents, spouses or friends.
