Ark
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Ark was a San Francisco people-search engine founded in March 2012 by Patrick Riley, Yiming Liu and Don McChesney, part of Y Combinator's Winter 2012 cohort. At ark.com it indexed over a billion social profiles across Facebook, LinkedIn, AngelList and other networks, letting users search for new people, old classmates and business contacts with up to 30 layerable filters. It generated 234,000 signups in its first month.
02 / Ark FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Ark was built on other companies' data, and the platforms it depended on turned hostile. Facebook cut off data access and launched Facebook Graph Search as a direct competitor, undermining the product's supply. Meanwhile the core promise — personalizing search across a billion profiles — proved costly to scale, and recommendation quality never became the defensible moat the team had bet on. With its data pipeline choked and incumbents closing in, Ark ceased operations in July 2015.
