OSSIC
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
OSSIC was a San Diego audio startup building the OSSIC X, a pair of 3D-audio headphones that sensed the dimensions of the wearer's ears and tracked head position, pitched as ideal for VR and gaming. Its 2016 crowdfunding campaign drew more than 22,000 pre-orders ($199-$299 tiers plus $999 developer units), raising $2.7 million on Kickstarter and $3.2 million across Kickstarter and Indiegogo - about half of roughly $6 million in total funding including angel investment.
02 / OSSIC FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Mass production was never reached: the company built only 250 pairs and shipped dozens. OSSIC blamed slow VR adoption and its own crowdfunding stretch goals, which bogged down the R&D team. It ran out of money - the team worked six months unpaid - and announced it would take $2 million more to reach mass production. It shut down in May 2018 with no refunds for backers.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
OSSIC raised $2.7M on Kickstarter (2016) and $3.2M combined with Indiegogo, plus angel investment (~$6M total); 22,000+ pre-orders.
- 02
Only 250 headphones were built; the first ~80 developer-tier units shipped in early 2018; mass production slipped.
- 03
On May 20, 2018 OSSIC announced it was shutting down immediately, out of money; remaining pre-orders unfulfilled, no refunds. A Facebook backers group threatened a class-action lawsuit.
