01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Smartisan Technology was a Beijing-based smartphone maker founded in 2012 by internet celebrity Luo Yonghao (Lao Luo). Inspired by Steve Jobs, it launched the Smartisan T1 in 2014 (marketed as the 'best smartphone in the eastern hemisphere'), the Nut phone series, a custom Android-based Smartisan OS, the TNT workstation, the Bullet Message messaging app (which gained 7 million users in three weeks in August 2018), plus air purifiers and other hardware. It raised about $250 million in total funding.

02 / Smartisan FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Smartisan never scaled beyond a niche: by end-2018 it had sold about 3 million phones total while Huawei sold 240 million, as the top five brands consolidated over 75% of China's market. It defaulted on supplier payments, racking up about RMB 600 million ($85–89 million) in debt to banks, vendors and partners by the second half of 2018. In early 2019 it sold its smartphone business to ByteDance (reportedly for RMB 300 million); founder Luo Yonghao was placed on a court restricted-consumption list in November 2019 and pledged to repay debts rather than file for bankruptcy.
