GoGoKid
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GoGoKid was ByteDance's one-on-one English tutoring app for children up to 12 years old. It connected students in China with native English-speaking tutors for live video lessons and was part of ByteDance's Dali Education unit, the company's standalone edtech brand launched in 2020.
02 / GoGoKid FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
GoGoKid was shut down as a direct result of China's July 2021 crackdown on private tutoring. The so-called double-reduction policy barred for-profit curriculum-based tutoring and strictly banned teachers based overseas from teaching students in China, which removed the foundation of GoGoKid's one-on-one model with foreign teachers. On August 5, 2021 the app suspended its curriculum for all Chinese students and cancelled all classes; it was removed from Chinese app stores and shut down completely as ByteDance scaled back its education business.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
ByteDance education brand Dali Education internal source said 你拍一 and GOGOKID apps were removed from stores and will stop operating after China's 'double reduction' (双减) policy; GOGOKID's overseas foreign teachers conflicted with the ban on offshore foreign tutors.
