01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
OmniVis, founded in 2017 in South San Francisco and co-founded by Purdue alumna Dr. Katherine Clayton and three professors, built a smartphone-based rapid cholera detection platform. A water sample is placed in a single-use test kit and inserted into a handheld device fitted to a smartphone; the platform detects the cholera bacterium (Vibrio cholerae) in under an hour instead of the three to five days conventional lab methods take, and uploads geo-tagged results to the cloud for outbreak surveillance.
