01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Elexsys Energy, trading in Australia as Planet Ark Power, was a Queensland-based clean-tech company building two-way smart grid technology. Co-founded by Bevan Holcombe and Richard Romanowski, it combined advanced power electronics with AI software to maximize and fast-track distributed solar on existing low-voltage grids without costly infrastructure upgrades. Its global award-winning, Arena-funded technology underpinned Australia's largest urban commercial solar-and-battery microgrid at Ikea Adelaide (over 3,000 panels, 3MW/3.45MWh battery, launched May 2023).

02 / eleXsys Energy FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Elexsys Energy was wound up on an application by the Australian Taxation Office, indicating it could not meet its tax obligations. Despite $3.5 million in federal grant funding for a Queensland manufacturing base (November 2021) and a $1.95 million South Australia government grant for the Ikea project, the company ran out of road and was placed in liquidation in August 2024; no fuller public account of its finances has been published.
