Britishvolt
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Britishvolt, founded in 2019 in the UK, set out to build the country's first major battery gigafactory, a 3.8 billion-pound plant near Blyth, Northumberland, designed to produce battery cells for more than 300,000 electric vehicles a year. It began construction in 2021 but never produced a battery at scale, and collapsed into administration in January 2023 after raising only about 200 million pounds of private funding.
02 / Britishvolt FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Britishvolt died from undercapitalization against an oversized plan: it needed billions for the gigafactory but had raised only about 200 million pounds by mid-2022, forcing construction to halt that August. Emergency funding and a temporary staff pay cut could not bridge the gap; the government refused to advance 30 million pounds from a promised 100-million package after key milestones were missed. The company entered administration on January 17, 2023, almost all 300 staff were made redundant, and the rescue buyout by Recharge Industries defaulted, leading to liquidation in November 2024. This concerns Britishvolt's own financing strategy and project planning.
