01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Titan Aerospace was a Moriarty, New Mexico aerospace company founded in 2011 by Max Yaney, later led by CEO Vern Raburn, the founder of Eclipse Aviation. It built solar-powered high-altitude drones — the Solara 50 and Solara 60, dubbed atmospheric satellites — designed to stay aloft for up to five years at 65,000 feet beaming internet access to remote areas. The 20-person startup was acquired by Google in April 2014 for an undisclosed sum, beating a reported $60 million approach from Facebook, to work on internet-connectivity projects including Project Loon.
