AGLOCO
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
AGLOCO ('A Global Community') was a pay-to-surf web company and the reincarnation of the dot-com-era AllAdvantage, with some of the same founders. Users installed the Viewbar browser toolbar and earned a share of AGLOCO's advertising income for surfing up to five hours per month, plus income from the surfing hours of members they referred, down four levels.
02 / AGLOCO FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
AGLOCO failed because its advertising revenue was insufficient: despite growing membership, revenue could not provide members with a meaningful distribution or support operating costs, and the development team could no longer fund operations from its own savings.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Launched
AGLOCO launches as the reincarnation of AllAdvantage's pay-to-surf model, promising members a share of advertising income - paid in cash or stock - rather than a flat hourly fee.
- Viewbar released
In June 2007, the AGLOCO Viewbar becomes available for download to members in order of joining, in its initial stages.
- Shutdown
On December 10, 2007, AGLOCO's development team emails members that revenue is not sufficient for a meaningful distribution or to support operating costs, and that they can no longer fund operations from their savings; the company shuts down.
