Alexa
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Alexa Internet (alexa.com) was a web analytics service founded in 1996 and acquired by Amazon in 1999. It provided website traffic rankings (the well-known Alexa Rank), competitive analysis, keyword research, and SEO tools, covering more than 30 million websites, and offered paid subscriptions with additional data for site owners.
02 / Alexa FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Alexa Internet failed because it lost relevance: rival services such as Similarweb and ComScore overtook it, its ranking methodology was seen as outdated with limited accuracy, and Amazon concluded the cost of maintaining the site was too high. After years of decline with no recovery in sight, Amazon decided to retire the service.
