01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Iron Ox was a California-based robotics and AI-driven farming startup founded in 2015 by Brandon Alexander (a Y Combinator alum) that built hybrid robotic greenhouses. Using robotic arms, Kiva-like plant-transfer carts, sensors and machine learning, its farms planted, shifted trays, monitored crops and harvested with minimal human labor, launching the world's first autonomous farm in October 2018. It operated farms in San Carlos and Gilroy, California, and broke ground on a 535,000-square-foot indoor farm in Lockhart, Texas in 2021, supplying leafy greens to retailers including Whole Foods. Having raised $103.2 million — including a $50 million Series C in 2022 led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures — the company laid off nearly half its staff in late 2022 to extend its cash runway. It said it was not winding down and remained open to further funding or a sale; no closure has been confirmed.
