Wonder
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Wonder (wonder.me) was a Berlin-based video communication startup founded in April 2020 by Leonard Witteler, Pascal Steck and Stephane Roux. Its platform created spatial, real-life-like video gatherings: users moved avatars across a 2D space and could spontaneously chat in small groups, have chance encounters, and host larger events - all in a browser with no registration. It grew to 200,000 monthly users and raised $11 million in seed funding led by EQT Ventures in December 2020, with BlueYard Capital also participating.
02 / Wonder FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Wonder was a pandemic-era phenomenon that could not survive the return to office. Its explosive 30%-week-over-week organic growth in 2020 evaporated as remote-work enthusiasm faded and competition from Zoom, Gather and SpatialChat intensified. No public post-mortem was published; by 2024-2025 the wonder.me website went dark and competitors described Wonder as 'officially having shut down'.
