Radar Radio
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Radar Radio was a London-based online radio station founded in 2008 by Ollie Ashley. It positioned itself as a platform for emerging talent in electronic music, rap, and grime, appealing mainly to young listeners and communities of color, and grew into one of the UK's most talked-about digital stations.
02 / Radar Radio FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Radar Radio collapsed under a scandal and chronic financial weakness. In April 2018 DJs and presenters accused the station of exploiting women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ contributors and of sexual harassment, triggering a mass exodus; the station suspended broadcasting on April 16 and never returned. The economics were broken: the 2017 accounts showed about 1.3 million pounds in losses and 4 million pounds in debt, mostly owed to its parent, and the station never built durable revenue.
