Mvxchange
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MVXchange, later MVX, was a Lagos-based maritime and digital freight logistics startup founded in 2019 by Tonye Membere-Otaji and Tobi Amusan. It began as a tech-driven platform matching vessel charter requests with available offshore support vessels for the African oil and gas industry, then pivoted to digital freight services (MVXtransit) including trucking, warehousing and trade finance through its MVXpay solution.
02 / Mvxchange FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
MVX failed against Nigeria's deteriorating macroeconomic backdrop: the company faced mounting economic instability, operational costs and market competition, and could not maintain traction after pivoting from vessel chartering to digital freight and trade finance. As Nigeria's currency crisis worsened, the startup ceased operations in late 2024, its website was put up for sale, and co-founder and CTO Tobi Amusan moved on to found FleetPlus Africa.
