01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Neatleaf built an AI- and robotics-driven cultivation management platform for indoor farming. Its flagship product, the Neatleaf Spyder, is a cable-mounted autonomous robot that flies over crop canopies, capturing millions of data points on plant health and growth metrics each day. The data is analyzed into actionable insights that let cultivation teams detect plant issues earlier than the human eye, monitor crops remotely, forecast yields, and steer growing conditions. The company focused first on cannabis cultivators and later expanded toward other indoor and greenhouse crops.

Events in the structured record
- Founded
Elmar Mair, formerly head of perception on Google X's Everyday Robots project, founded Neatleaf in Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley, California, to apply robotics and AI to crop monitoring.
- Seed funding
Neatleaf raised a $2.5 million seed round in May 2021 to develop its cultivation monitoring technology.
- $4M round led by AgFunder
In January 2024 Neatleaf raised $4 million led by AgFunder to expand production of the Spyder and reach more growers; AgFunder partner Tom Shields joined the board.
- Commercial rollout
The Neatleaf Spyder was deployed at PURPLEFARM's 86,000-square-foot cannabis cultivation facility in New Brunswick, Canada, running around-the-clock canopy scans feeding AI analytics; the grower reported about a 20% yield increase after deployment.
