01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Jetpac was a San Francisco social travel startup founded in 2011 by Pete Warden, Derek Dukes and Julian Green, backed by Khosla Ventures, Jerry Yang (AME Ventures) and Morado Ventures. Using sophisticated image processing, it analyzed publicly posted social photos — from Facebook and Instagram — to create city guides: the Webby Award-winning Jetpac City Guides app curated over 150 million photos across 6,000 cities, telling users which bars had the most women, which beaches had the best views. Google acquired Jetpac in August 2014 for its image-processing technology, and its apps were removed from the App Store; this was not a failure event.
