01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Desti was a US travel-planning startup founded in 2011 as a spin-out from SRI International, the research institute behind Siri. Its iPad app used AI and natural-language processing — built on SRI's CALO technology — to answer travel questions in a conversational interface, reading thousands of reviews, photos and articles to recommend hotels, restaurants and destinations. It raised about $2 million.

02 / Desti FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Desti could not turn good technology into revenue: users found the app useful but ended up booking on other, more trusted platforms such as TripAdvisor, so monetization never materialized and the Series A came up short. Competing as a newcomer against travel giants was a losing proposition. In 2014 Nokia's HERE mapping division acquired Desti for its semantic search backend to power location services, and the consumer app was shut down.
