01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Otto (Ottomotto) was a self-driving-truck startup founded in January 2016 in San Francisco by former Google self-driving-car engineer Anthony Levandowski and Google Maps product lead Lior Ron, with co-founders Claire Delaunay and Don Burnette. Operating from a SoMa garage with about 90 engineers from Google, Apple and Tesla, it converted Volvo semi-trucks with self-driving technology and tested them on interstate highways. Six months after its public launch in May 2016, Uber acquired it for a reported $680 million; in October 2016 an Otto truck completed a 132-mile autonomous beer-delivery run from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins.
