FrontRow
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FrontRow was an Indian hobby-learning and community platform founded in 2020 by Ishaan Preet Singh, Mikhil Raj and Shubhadit Sharma, where celebrities and athletes taught their craft to consumers, courses in comedy, singing, cricket, gaming and music. The company raised about $18 million from Elevation Capital, Eight Roads Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Not Boring Capital; 2 million people downloaded the app and over 250,000 paid for a course.
02 / FrontRow FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
FrontRow's hobby-learning market was far smaller than believed and never venture-scalable. Annualized revenue plateaued at $3-4 million while marketing costs ballooned past 100% of revenue and course completion stayed below average. After blitzscaling on a $14 million Series A, the company cut most jobs in 2022, shrank back to a 35-person seed-stage team running experiments that failed to find product-market fit, and shut down in July 2023, returning unused capital to investors.
