WM Motor
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
WM Motor (威马汽车) was a Shanghai-based Chinese electric vehicle maker founded in late 2015 by auto industry veteran Freeman Shen (沈晖). Once ranked alongside Nio, Li Auto and XPeng among China's rising EV startups, and backed by Baidu, Tencent and Shanghai's state-owned asset regulator, it built mass-market electric SUVs like the W5 and the M7, with sales across China plus exports to Asia, Europe and Latin America.
02 / WM Motor FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
WM Motor could not scale fast enough in a price war against giants like BYD. Sales in China fell by roughly a third to about 27,500 units in 2022, and the company implemented salary cuts and layoffs, delaying its fifth model, the M7. Three listing attempts failed - Shanghai's STAR Market, a Hong Kong IPO, and a backdoor listing via reverse takeover of Hong Kong-listed Apollo Future Mobility - cutting off funding. On October 7, 2023, WM Motor entered a court-approved pre-restructuring process in Shanghai, citing the pandemic, sluggish capital markets, raw-material price swings and setbacks in raising capital; founder Freeman Shen denied rumors he had fled and pledged a 'rebirth' with global strategic investors.
