01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

N26 US was the American operation of N26, the Berlin-based neobank founded in 2013 by Valentin Stalf and Maximilian Tayenthal. Less than two-and-a-half years after launching, N26 shut its US operations: on November 18, 2021 it announced its 500,000 American customers would lose app access from January 11, 2022, saying it would sharpen its focus on its core European business and expand its product line into investment products. The US exit followed the earlier UK withdrawal (February 2020) and came amid BaFin anti-money-laundering scrutiny and fierce competition from Chime, Varo and incumbent banks.

02 / N26 US FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

N26's US exit was a strategic retrenchment, not an insolvency: the stated reason was to double down on Europe. Behind it: the US market proved expensive and slow — co-founder and CEO Max Tayenthal said the US was no longer a priority; 500,000 customers in 2.5 years was thin against entrenched incumbents (JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America) and upstarts (Chime, Varo). Regulatory pressure also weighed: German regulator BaFin capped new-customer onboarding at 50,000 a month over anti-money-laundering lapses and fined the bank about $5 million. With $900 million raised at a $9 billion valuation in 2021, N26 chose to spend its war chest in Europe.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

N26 as a whole reported a net loss of €172.4 million for the year ended December 31, 2021 (up 14% year over year), with €28.2 million of that from non-EU operations. Neither figure is specific to the US unit — the company did not break out US losses — so no US loss with disclosed subject, period and basis was extracted.
