Coya
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Coya was a German digital property and casualty insurer headquartered in Berlin, founded in 2016 by Andrew Shaw, Dr. Peter Hagen, and Sebastián Villarroel. One of the first German digital insurers, it offered liability policies for people and pets, home contents, bicycle and e-bike theft, and pet health insurance, delivering policies and handling claims entirely through desktop and mobile apps - with no paperwork or middlemen. Licensed by BaFin, it launched in 2018 after raising a $10 million seed round led by Valar Ventures (Peter Thiel's fund) and later a $30 million round led by Valar and e.ventures; it grew 300% in 2021 and insured 80,000 users in Germany. In January 2022 French insurtech Luko announced the acquisition of Coya, merging it into Luko's home-care ecosystem to build a full-stack European neo-insurer for more than 300,000 people; Luko was itself later acquired by Allianz.
02 / Coya FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
FinanceFWD (10 Jun 2021) reported Berlin digital insurer Coya spent months failing to raise new outside capital because its numbers did not convince the market; after no external money was found, existing shareholders put in about $5 million, marketing affiliates were frozen, and a merger was already being discussed.
FinanceFWD/Finanz-Szene: Coya could not raise new outside investors; figures had not convinced the market.
FinanceFWD noted 2020 premium income of only about €2 million despite large early funding, and affiliate/Facebook/Check24 marketing was halted under budget restrictions.
