01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Seva Coffee was a Y Combinator Summer 2015 consumer electronics startup founded by Deepak Boggavarapu in San Francisco. Its insight: coffee starts losing flavor the moment beans are roasted, yet almost all home and office coffee is made with pre-roasted beans. The company invented a machine that takes pods of unroasted green coffee beans, automatically roasts and grinds them to taste, and pours a fresh cup — 'the entire coffee roastery experience on your kitchen countertop.' The machine sold for thousands of dollars, with $1 bean pods at a reported 75% gross margin. It started with the corporate office market, with ambitions to reach home kitchens. Seva Coffee raised a $120,000 seed round on August 19, 2015, backed by Y Combinator.
